While I am an out gay man, I’ve never been able to relate to the gay scene in general, let alone the nightlife aspect of it, but that is the exact reason I choose to do my essay on this subject – as a photojournalist in the real world, I will be covering stories that I may be uncomfortable or unfamiliar with, so I took the initiative to shoot this subject and conquer my fear of the unknown.
I decided to challenge myself by doing an essay on a subject I’m not particularly familiar or, truthfully, comfortable with – Denver’s gay nightlife scene. For the final project in my Photojournalism class at the Art Institute of Colorado, we are required to shoot a photo story or photo essay on the topic of our choice.
